GUALALA BLUFF TRAIL

The Gualala Bluff Trail, an ongoing Redwood Coast Land Conservancy (RCLC) project, was the original inspiration for the formation of RCLC.

An early planning organization for the Mendocino County coastal town of Gualala, the Gualala Area Coalition, was concerned about the pending expiration of certain downtown Offers to Dedicate (OTD). OTDs had been established by the California Coastal Commission as a way of providing public access to significant coastal features via private property. A determination was made to capture this valuable preservation opportunity by having a non-profit land trust accept and implement these offers.

With this in mind, a small group of dedicated local citizens banded together to incorporate RCLC as a non-profit land trust in 1992. RCLC became one of the first such organizations in California to accept an OTD, and the planning for the Gualala Bluff Trail began.

Bluff TrailThe Trail provides spectacular Gualala river estuary and ocean vistas as well as unparalleled opportunities to experience estuary wildlife "up close and personal." The initial phase of the Trail, completed in 1998, consists of a 500 foot landscaped path from the bluff edge behind the Sea Cliff Commercial Center to an enhanced overlook behind the Surf Motel. Phase II, a more challenging section, is in process. It continues the Trail along the bluff edge to the south end of Oceansong Restaurant.

The Gualala Bluff Trail is a perpetual gift for Gualala area residents and visitors. It is made possible by the generous financial support of the California State Coastal Conservancy and the citizens of California who have voted for State park and conservation propositions.
